Documentary Photography for Nonprofit Organizations
A hands-on documentary photography workshop with Roberto Mata
What makes a photograph useful beyond its visual appeal? How can photographers document a community initiative with sensitivity, respect, and a clear understanding of the people and organizations they are photographing?
In this workshop, participants will work alongside TAPARI, a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving Miami’s Little Haiti community, to document the people, preparations, and activities behind its community food distribution efforts.
The challenge is to create photographs that do more than record an event. Participants will learn to observe, anticipate meaningful moments, approach people respectfully, and build a coherent visual narrative that communicates the organization's work.
Roberto Mata will guide the photographic process and oversee the final editing and selection. A curated collection of images will be delivered to TAPARI for use in its communications, outreach, and fundraising efforts, subject to appropriate permissions.
The goal is simple: to make photographs that are meaningful, responsible, and genuinely useful to others.
