Behind the Façade: A Photowalk in Miami Beach
We walked not toward the neon lights or the Art Deco curves of Ocean Drive, but away from them—into the alleys, the narrow spaces that hold the real texture of Miami Beach. There, behind the glamour, we found quiet scenes: loading docks, cracked tiles, faded pastel walls weathered by salt and time. It was a different Miami—one stripped of spectacle, full of unexpected compositions and soft interruptions. As photographers, we looked for what’s usually ignored, and found beauty not in the performance, but in the pause behind it.

We usually meet at 9:00 a.m. at the school, 7117 North Miami Avenue 33150, and have coffee for those who drink! Only some people drink coffee, but I still have coffee for everyone. Sometimes, we have a rented van, sometimes just an SUV, and sometimes nothing because we will walk from school or take an Uber because it is hard to park.
I give instructions about what we will see, what we can expect, and what a possible approach might be. I check all the equipment that will be carried, and I try to ensure that I at least master all the basics of each camera and that there is no setting that could ruin the day. I check cards and batteries.
We will shoot for 2 to 3 and maybe 4 hours, depending on the subject selected and the distance from the school. Upon returning, each photographer downloads his work on his computer and makes an edition of images between 25 and 35. We share them on a TV, and I will guide the participation; we all contribute and share; it is essential to have constructive criticism and to learn from the experience of others. A final edition is made, and we review successes and failures; enjoy and celebrate!
